Major Powers is the latest reshuffling of members of bands long at the focus of our attention. The power trio, formed in 2011, comprises former members of Growth of Alliance and The Look while leaning heavily toward the sound of the latter, with a more theatrical tinge.
On We Became Monsters, brothers Kevin and Dylan Gautschi hold down the guitars and drums, respectively. Gautschi plays brilliantly off of Powers' piano-driven arrangements while his brother's simple but effective drumming keeps the whole thing tightly held together. Rich with well-crafted changes, infectious melodies, and impressive three-part vocal harmonies, the band channels everything from Weezer, to the Beatles, to Queen into its expertly crafted yet fun blend of quirky pop, self-described as "adventure rock." Exploring topics from affluenza, to the Russian revolution, to social alienation with a biting sense of humor and impeccable musicianship, Major Powers have delivered a wonderfully engaging debut album that doesn't take itself too seriously. They have successfully overcome my anti-bands-with-no-bass-player bias.
Point of reference: Queen, Weezer, The Beatles, Muse, Gogol Bordello
Best tracks: Ode to Russia, We're All Gonna Die!
